Losing 0-3 on the opening day against Milwall and Millen stepping in to save us, probably the last time we beat PNE as well (4-0 at Deepdale). 2011/12 was the great escape over easter with Bolasie dribbling in a goal to make it 3-1 (I think) against Coventry at Ashton Gate. Chris Wood with a penalty to give us our first win in 4000 years at Forest. Easy to amalgamate the two, the club was a mess! Still strange to think at the start of 12/13 we smashed Cardiff in August and were looking half decent before slumping to last. There is a quote from Marcello Lippi I think which says something like a good manager can make a team 5% better, a poor one makes them 25% worse. I think they have been allowed to become overexposed by tactical instructions which are a little naive, and enable the quality teams in this division to score fairly easily.

Our goal return is actually pretty good and Kodjia looks an excellent signing, it's the other end of the pitch which was worrying me when I wrote this!

All that said, signs over the last two games have been far more promising, and I'd like to think the management are well aware that the defence/attack balance isn't yet right. Let's wait and see what happens over further matches; I don't actually think we'll go down, because I think we will continue to improve on this area.

Agree that we look better with Baker in the side, and that we need to have patience. In fact, we largely agree I think!

Safe journey back from Bolton - not a game I could make this year, although last time it was a fixture I was there.

Willwillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02147131096600731560noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-5181568471257290922015-11-04T16:48:40.019+00:002015-11-04T16:48:40.019+00:00Well said Red Phil,

How could someone have made the journey to Boro, seen wins v Forest and last night and still be so critical of a right back, a system and a manager which TODAY sees at 3 teams in a much worse position than us and with 2 '6-pointers' coming up in the next 3 games. If these so-called fans want to post their opinions i suggest they start with "I dont go to games but want City to be winning the Champions League in 2 years time and here are my views" - then i can stop wasting my time! Oh yes and how crap was League 1 last year, and how little interest was there in a Great Double (40,000+) and how poor were golaie errors 99 times last season etc etc. Point made, I hope; Hampshire RedAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03846879953231727973noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-29347898109548767422015-11-03T16:04:01.626+00:002015-11-03T16:04:01.626+00:00An extremely well composed article. From someone who has seen every minute of every game the question I would have to ask is this: please remember that Cotts tried to buy an experienced Championship striker before the start of the season but was unable to probably because we are not yet deemed as fashionable yet for a top name. This obviously indicates that he knew what our problems might be at the outset. The other point I would make is that surely with the success that this group of players brought us last season then they are entitled to have a chance at this level to see if they can I'm prove sufficiently to help us get established. I think one of the keys to Saturdays result was the absence of Baker who was just beginning to form an effective relationship with Flint.
If by the turn of the year we are still in the same position as we are now then I think that is the time to be more cautious and look at different players and systems. Please lets give these players and manager a bit more time before we look at alternatives. Do you remember how enjoyable last season was they deserve it.Red Philnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-58530884603085763832015-06-05T16:32:06.899+01:002015-06-05T16:32:06.899+01:00Hi Will,

This season has been fun, but 2007 was "bigger" because it represented completion of a goal that we had been striving for (and failing to reach) for the best part of a decade. And indeed, any joy at this season's success is tempered by the memory of just how awful we were to end up in the position to be able to have a crack at the League One title in the first place.

One could probably write many tomes on the futility of football-fandom: everything is cyclical and in all probability we will be back in League One within a decade. Our level, statistically, if floating between the second and third tiers, and our experience of football is almost certainly going to be restricted to the lows of relegation battles and the highs of striving to go back up again (and then hoping, against all previous experience, that this time will be different).Garethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18289571775769637947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-57946046747684411922014-10-08T04:51:30.230+01:002014-10-08T04:51:30.230+01:00It is very difficult to made a good and disciplin... The basic idea is that anyone can publish content - and anyone can earn money from their content (if it's good).

I came across your blog and would love you to write for us about football.

Our aim is to put power in the hands of journalists and bloggers. As such, although we'll cover News, Life & Sport, contributors will have complete editorial freedom within those categories. Essentially, you can write whatever you want, whenever you want - and if it's good, you'll get paid for it.

Please let me know if you might be interested in contributing. I've got a PDF I can send over which will give you a clearer idea of our offering, and I can be reached on william@the-newshub.com.

PS - although original content is preferable, you can also re-post content from your blog so you can reach new audiences, earn some money, improve SEO etc., without any real extra work.

William Stolermanhttp://the-newshub.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-18558524849386428962013-11-26T14:47:59.311+00:002013-11-26T14:47:59.311+00:00What a superb article! I stood and applauded our team on Saturday for what I thought was an honest effort and was questioned by those around me as if I'd lost my marbles. 'What are you doing?' - 'I'm supporting my team'. I thought that was my part in being a City supporter. If you don't like the manager write to the Board - write to him but don't get at the players for all the good reasons you've given here.
Of course the real problem is ignorance - mostly but not completely concerning the game of football. People who see a wide player in acres of space on one side of the pitch while the ball is on the other expect our full back to wander out there with him - as if it was a game of basketball. I listened to people harangue MckIndoe for obviously doing what Johnson had told him which was tuck in and support the front man. So many around me viewed him as a winger - who should be getting his boots white on the touchline like Stanley Matthews. That lack of knowledge then feeds into this overwhelming desire to see the ball go forward no matter the circumstance - a territorial fever that still induces a moan when inevitably most of the time it results in possession being given to the opposition.
Of course I have concerns. I wonder why the team fell into the trap of hitting balls up to a small forward like Baldock when the manager didn't want them to do that. Probably because it played to a crowd they were increasingly desperate to get off their backs. A game is not a shareholders meeting where you can get at the Chairman and the Board for poor performance. The team are engaged on the pitch in a struggle, a test of ability, of tactics and especially wills.
We as fans love the idea of being the twelfth man, the extra player for our team, the ones who suck the ball into the opposition net. Turn that around and imagine the damage we can do to our own players - not just the young and inexperienced ones but even the seasoned pros, doing the best they can under pressure - a pressure so many of our crowd seem content to increase.Simonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-83997955183921166572013-09-16T19:15:32.157+01:002013-09-16T19:15:32.157+01:00Excellent post, really well written, considered an...Excellent post, really well written, considered and contemplative.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-604661788480389878.post-60491517975160615672013-06-27T13:40:11.824+01:002013-06-27T13:40:11.824+01:00Wonderful website. This has been far outweighed by the disappointment and in some cases disgust at the attitude of some of the players we have had. Hopefully under O'Driscoll we can build a better structure and bring some youth through. Either way I think the point of your blog is really important, it is only a game to be enjoyed as a community, far too many fans take it far too seriously.
